Israeli scientists discovered the mechanism that promotes the regeneration of β cells

Israeli Hebrew university institute of medical research, professor Mr Doyle and Jerusalem hadad medical center and scientists discovered a roach pharmaceutical company makes biological mechanism of the β cell regeneration, the discovery will help develop medicine for the treatment of Ⅰ diabetes.

In the experiment, the researchers destroyed 80 percent of the insulin-producing cells in adult mice, causing them to show signs of diabetes. Blood glucose levels in diabetic mice were significantly elevated and a large number of new β cells were produced, suggesting that glucose levels were associated with regeneration of β cells, compared with control mice.

Further studies have shown that an enzyme in cells that senses glucose levels, called glucokinase, plays an important role in triggering cell regeneration. When glucose levels in the blood increase, it tells the cells to renew. Studies have shown that β cells are highly sensitive to glucose, and when elevated glucose levels are detected in the blood, they give out the signal the initiation of beta cell regeneration. This is the first time that scientists have found a relationship between β cell regeneration and glucose kinase levels, which may lead to the development of new medicine to regulate glucose kinase or other pathways and methods to induce beta cell regeneration.

Ⅰ diabetes is a disease that is due to the abnormal immune response to kill insulin-producing β cells. The body will not be able to put the uptake of glucose into energy from food if the body is lack of insulin, so the patients with type 1 diabetes must supplement daily injections of insulin, or glucose in the blood accumulation can lead to many serious consequences. This breakthrough for patients with type 1 diabetes offers hope.
