Hong Kong university of science and technology cell research helps prevent blindness and hearing los

A new cell study at the Hong Kong university of science and technology could help prevent and treat blindness and deafness.

According to the life sciences division of hkust, about 2-3 per cent of congenital deafness and blindness in children are caused by actin 7A variation. The protein is responsible for transport within cells.

The life sciences division of hkust has discovered that the complex molecular structure of this protein can explain the transport of actin and how to maintain the structure of hair cells in the ear. This helps to understand how genetic variations can lead to congenital deafness and blindness and lead to early diagnosis and treatment. They also advised couples to have a physical examination to see if there are any potential risks before deciding to have a baby.
