CDC: the risk of EHEC infection is low, but prevention and control is still needed

Aiming at the recent outbreak of EHEC in Germany, the Chinese center for disease control and prevention held a video meeting on June 7 to report the progress of the outbreak to the centers for disease control and prevention in the provinces (districts, cities) and key port cities, and arrange monitoring, laboratory testing and prevention and control. Experts attending the meeting believe that, based on the analysis of the current situation, the risk of the epidemic spreading to China is low, but we still need to do a good job in prevention and control.

Experts say the outbreak of EHEC in Germany is food-borne and there is no evidence of widespread human-to-human contact. Due to the limited amount of fresh vegetables and other food imported into China, the risk of the outbreak strain being introduced into China through food is low. In addition, although there may be cases of infection in Germany by people travelling to or returning from Germany, there is less likelihood that the virus will cause further widespread spread within the country.

At the same time, experts also pointed out that EHEC infection may lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), this case fatality rate is high, must pay attention to the treatment of cases, medical institutions around the country should do a good job in case detection, reporting and testing.

It is learned that the Chinese center for disease control and prevention is currently paying close attention to the information about the outbreak, the investigation of the source of infection and the way of transmission and the treatment experience from Germany, the European Union and the world health organization. Risk assessment of China will be carried out according to the epidemic situation at any time, and response level and measures will be adjusted at any time.

At present, the center for disease control and prevention has prepared laboratory technology for the epidemic situation, and provided rapid training on laboratory testing methods for EHEC to technicians of relevant units at all levels.
